Jan Hoy lives and works in the town of Coupeville on Whidbey Island, WA. She received her degree in Fine Arts from the University of Washington and has worked as an artist her entire life.
Jan is not a newcomer to the Pacific Northwest. She has lived in this area all her life, first Seattle, then Port Townsend, and finally Whidbey Island. The misty weather, silvery skies, and the abundance of healthy greens and browns have impacted her aesthetic sensibility. It is no wonder her chosen material is clay. Even the finishes are an iron oxide giving them a natural rusty appearance.
Jan’s work embodies form in movement. Most of her sculptures include ridged edges but in counterbalance they curve through space. The juxtaposition of defined edges with soft curvilinear movement captures her imagination and produces unique and satisfying forms.
The work is always abstract, and the initial small pieces are created in water-based clay. Some of these pieces are scaled up and fabricated in bronze, Corten steel, mild steel with paint, or stainless steel. These large-scale pieces have found homes in both private and public spaces. Her work is featured in the Sutter Hill Cathedral Hospital, San Francisco, CA, Youngstown Flats, Seattle, WA, Lake Oswego, OR, town of La Conner, WA, Veterans Home, Walla Walla, WA, and the city of Bainbridge, WA. Her sculptures are in the collections of the Museum of NW Art, La Conner, and BIMA, Bainbridge Is., WA.
Jan’s work is represented by the J. Rinehart Gallery, Seattle and by the Paul Kyle Gallery, Vancouver, BC.
The Whidbey Pottery Salon is a free, volunteer-based, not-for-profit, local group. We want to connect potters with other potters so we can be inspired by each other. We're excited to nerd out about clay.
